Choosing the Correct Pad – Part III

Once you have chosen a machine, choosing the correct backing plate is the next step. If you are using a rotary polisher, the plate should have a 5/8 x 11 female insert. If you are using a random orbital (i.e. Porter Cable 7424), the plate should have a 5/16 x 24 stud on it. For sizing the pad up to the plate, it is recommended to use a plate at least a ½” smaller than the pad. It is suggested to not go below ¼”. This will provide some cushion from edge of backing plate possibly rubbing / hitting the surface of the vehicle. I suggest not using a backing plate with same diameter as the pad being used.
